Nearly Thirty Years of Basketball Tradition
Our Mission:
Schaeffer Classic 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament was founded twenty-eight years ago with a single goal, and that was to have a great time with family and friends at my dad, Jack Schaeffer's new home in Bonita. When he bought the house, he told the family that the first thing he would do is lay down some concrete. Then as soon as the concrete dried, we would have a basketball tournament!
True to his word, in March of 1996 he invited friends and family to his house for the Inaugural Schaeffer Classic! A picture of the original flyer is attached below. He provided all of the beer, barbeque, trophies, and a cash prize to the winning team. It was such a hit, we did it again the following year, but it grew. By the third year, it was too big to hold at his house, so we moved it to Rohr Park where it was held for 18 consecutive years.
In that same year, he decided that instead of giving cash to the winners, it would do more good if it was donated to charity. He chose the National Multiple Sclerosis Society to be the beneficiary in honor of my step-dad, Larry McKinney who lived with MS for over 30 years. Since then, thanks to our loyal participants, this tournament has raised tens of thousands of dollars for that worthy cause!
My dad has since passed down the management responsibility to my cousin Justin and me, and with the help of the entire family, we will be hosting the 27th Annual Schaeffer Classic on March 30, 2024.
